Definition of a Veteran

Federal Definition
Veteran means any person who has been separated under honorable conditions from any branch of the armed forces after having served at least 90 days on active duty. One day must have been during wartime service.

State Definition
Veteran means any person who has been separated under honorable conditions from any branch of the armed forces of the United States after having served on active duty for 181 consecutive days or by reason of disability incurred while serving on active duty, or who has active military service certified under Section 401, Public Law 95-202, and who is a citizen of the United States or is a resident alien. A general under honorable condition discharge qualifies the veteran for all benefits, provided the other conditions of length of service are met.

National Guard & Reserves

The term veteran does not include any member of the national guard or the reserve component of the armed forces ordered to active duty for the sole purpose of training.

This definition comes from Minnesota Statute 197.447.
